Abstract: Objective The present study was designed to gain insight into the dynamic epidemic situation and the epidemiological characteristics of the notifiable communicable diseases in Daishan Island from 1996 to 2005，and to provide scientific facts for the formulation and improvement of the strategies for the prevention and control of communicable diseases．Methods Descriptive epi-demiology was employed to analyze the data on the incidences of the communicable diseases and their order and the change in the diseases among the residents in Haidao in the 10 years．Reslllts It was found that the average annual incidence rate of communicable diseases in the 10 years was 386.57/lakh, with all annual mortality rate of 0.10/lakh (2 cases)．The total incidence rate of communicable diseases took on a descending trend．But the incidence of sexually transmitted dis-eases increased significantly．The communicable diseases transmitted through blood and sexual ac-tivities and intestinal infectious diseases prevailed accounting for 87.54％ of the total cases．Conclusion The total incidence rate of communicable diseases assumed a descending trend in the 10 years..Hepatitis B，gonorrhea，hepatitis (hepatitis A and non—branched type hepatitis)，tubercu-losis，dysentery，syphilis were six main communicable diseases in the county during 1996-2005．The prevention and control of the diseases still need to be taken seriously．
