Abstract: Objective The present study was conducted to find out the infection situation and the risk factors of HIV among drug addicts in Qingyuan City so as to provide a scientific basis for the intervention, prevention and control of the prevalence of AIDS. Methods From 2000 to 2005, HIV antibody test was conducted on drug addicts in 4 drug rehabilitation centers (Qingchen, Qingxin, Yingde and Fogang) of Qingyuan City, and analysis was made on the survey data on their behaviors of drug abuse. Results The average HIV infection rate among drug addicts was 3.38% in Qingyuan from 2000 to 2005, and the positive rate was the highest in Yingde sentinel (9.67%). 85.90%of drug addicts used drugs by injection, of which 61.75% shared syringes, so those who shared syringes had a remarkably higher infection rate of HIV than those who did not (P<0.05). 39.66% of the drug addicts had commercial sexual behaviors, of which only 9.07% used condom each time. Conclusions HIV infection rate is relatively high among the drug addicts in Qingyuan City, and there were such risk factors as sharing syringes and unsafe commercial sexual behaviors in drug addicts. Currently, it is important to strengthen the public education and conduct the behavior intervention for drug addicts as soon as possible.
