Abstract: Objective This study was conducted to gain an insight into the prevalence of ocular diseases in Heshun County for the prevention of blindness caused by the diseases.Methods Screening of ocular diseases was conducted in the whole county,with the results analyzed in terms of the incidences of individual ocular diseases and their distribution in the county.Results It was found that among the different ocular diseases cataract was ranked at the top incidence,accounting for 18.83%, followed in a descending order by pterygium(18.40%),glaucoma(11.59%),eye injury(8.22%)and cornea disease(5.09%).Conclusion The major ocular diseases seen in Heshun County include cataract,pterygium,lacrimal sac inflammation,glaucoma,trachoma and eye injury,with cataract,eye injury,glaucoma and uveitis being the major causes of blindness,of which glaucoma and uveitis have a high blindness-causing rate.The actual incidences of the ocular diseases might be higher than what has been observed due to the lack of a complete coverage of the population in the survey.
