Abstract: Objective The present investigation was made to understand the constituent ratio of injuries of inhabitants in Huaibei City and their degree of harmfulness for providing a theoretical basis on which to formulate measures for the prevention of injuries. Methods The detailed data of 3577 injured cases, who were admitted to the Emergency Departments of The People's Hospital of Huaibei City, The General Hospital of Huaibei Coal Mining Group and The Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Huaibei City from July,2004 to August, 2005, were classified based on the criteria for the classification of injuries in theWHO Injury Surveillance Guidelines and statistically analyzed. All the cases met the criteria for the classification of injuries in theWHO Injury Surveillance Guidelines. Results It was found that traffic accident was the most common cause of injuries among inhabitants in Huaibei City from July, 2004 to Augest, 2005, with blunt injuries ranked as the second most common cause, followed by Falls, stab wounds and poisonings in turn, all these five causes of injurys accounting for 93.60% of the total of injuries. It was showed that male men were more often injuried than women with a constituent ratio of male to famale of 2.05∶1(2403/1174). Conclusion The top five causes of injuries are in turn traffic accidents, blunt injuries, Fall, puncture wounds and poisonings in the City of Huaibei.As far as the degree of injuries is concerned, the top 4 injuries are superficial injuries, open wounds, bone fractures and poisoningsin turn. Young adults are the high-risk population prone to injuries, to whom special attention should be paid to prevention of injures.
