Abstract:
Objective This study was conducted to provide an insight into the epidemiological characteristics of neonataltetanus (NT) in Jinhua from 2000 to 2007 and to identify the risk factors related to the high incidence of NT. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was applied. Results A total of 524 cases of NT were reported in Jinhua city from 2000 to 2007, with the incidence rate between 0.07%-0.18%. The cases distributed among 8 counties/districts of Jinhua except Pan? 蒺an county. Neonates aged 5-8 days were mostly affected (66.60%). No obvious seasonality was present. Migrant children delivered at home in other provinces without standard medical care were primarily involved. Conclusion The overall morbidity of NT increased gradually by year during these years. Therefore, it is vital to enforce effective measures such as intensified NT surveillance, intervention, and health education so as to improve the maternal awareness of self care, to publicize hospitalized labor and delivery, and to standardize new delivery approaches for the prevention and control of NT.
