Abstract:
Objective The study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in 0 to 2 yearold children in Changping district, Beijing. Methods The investigation was conducted among 0 to 2 year old children in 33primary health centers, community hospitals and 36 nurseries through inspection and cardiac auscultation for screening,ultrasound examination for confirmation. Results The prevalence of CHD was 0.27% in survived 0 to 2 year old children. The prevalence rate of the 0 year old group was significantly higher than the 1 to 2 year old group (P0.005). Ventricular septal defect constituted the major type of congenital heart diseases. From September 1, 1998 to August 31, 2001, a total of 14children was born and died of CHD, including 13 1 year olds; there were 9 newborn deaths, including 7 early neonataldeaths. Conclusion CHD had become a primary disease affecting the life and health of infants and young children. Therefore,in addition to the preexisting intervention of CHD, premarital medical checkups, prenatal care and preterm screening for CHD shall also be warranted to improve the health of children in Changping district.
