Abstract: Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of mumps in Jinan in 2007 and provide evidence for the prevention and control of mumps. Methods The mumps cases reported in 2007 were surveyed and blood samples were taken to conduct mumps-IgM detection by ELISA. Results A total of 702 mumps cases were reported in Jinan in 2007 with the incidence rate of 11.49/lakh. The mumps cases occurred all the year round, but mainly distributed in late spring or early summer and in winter, The majority of cases occurred in 3-12 age group, accounting for 68.95％. The laboratory confirmation rate of mumps cases was higher in rural area (55.89%) than in urban area (39.27%). The complication rate was 2.12% and was lower in the cases with vaccination than in the case without vaccination. Conclusion Mumps is one of the diseases which affect the health of children and adolescents. It is suggested to conduct study on mumps vaccination strategy and develop/implement reasonable, standard and scientific vaccination scheme to increase the immunity of susceptible population and reduce the incidence of mumps
