Incidence trends and epidemiology of notifiable communicable diseases in Wusu, Xinjiang,2006 - 2009

Abstract: Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics and incidence trends of notifiable communicable diseases in Wusu. Methods The descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the data obtained from communicable diseases surveillance from 2006 to 2009. Results No class A communicable disease cases were reported from 2006 to 2009, A total of 6739 cases, including 21 deaths, of 18 notifiable communicable diseases of class B and C were reported. The average annual morbidity was 783.00/lakh, the average annual case fatality was 3.12. The first five communicable diseases of class B with high incidence were viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, dysentery,2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) and syphilis, accounting for 97.40% of the reported cases. The first three communicable diseases of class C included other infectious diarrhea, mumps and hand foot and mouth disease, accounting for 88.88% of the total reported cases. Conclusion The overall incidence of communicable diseases increased during this period (Cochran Armitage trend test 2=216.14, P0.01), but after the removal of hand foot and mouth diseases and 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) which were newly included in notifiable communicable diseases, the overall incidence of the communicable diseases didnt show significant increase (2=1.17, P0.05). The incidence of class B communicable diseases-intestinal infection and blood borne disease and sexually transmitted disease declined, but the incidence of class C communicable disease-respiratory disease increased during this period. The rank of the diseases had changed, virus hepatitis no longer ranked first. Pulmonary tuberculosis,2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1), syphilis, other infectious diarrhea, mumps and hand foot and mouth disease had become the major diseases which posed threat to local peoples health. The prevention and control of these diseases should be strengthened.
