Abstract:
Objective To investigate the characteristics of non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 isolated in Jiangxi province between 2000 and 2021.
Methods The genome sequences of these strains were obtained with next generation sequencing; the cladogram was based on the SNPs in the core genome of these strains. Pulse field gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the variation of these strains. Minimum inhibitory concentration test was used to evaluate the susceptibility of these strains to antibiotics.
Results The non-toxigenic V. cholerae O1 and O139 isolates in Jiangxi showed mire genome diversity compared with the toxigenic strains which caused cholera epidemic and pandemic. Some O1 non-toxigenic strains carried drug resistance plasmid, showing low sensitivity to multi antibiotics.
Conclusion The genome diversity of non-toxigenic V. cholerae O1 and O139 was high. Surveillance for non-toxigenic V. cholerae strains carrying drug resistance plasmid should be carried out.
