Surveillance of bacterial intestinal infectious diseases in Xinjiang, 2007

  • Objective The study was conducted to investigate the trends of bacterial intestinal infectious diseases in Xinjiang, provide the evidence for further development of prevention and control strategies. Methods Epidemiological and etiological surveillance for bacterial intestinal infectious diseases such as cholera, typhoid and bacillary dysentery was conducted in 55 surveillance counties in 15 prefectures. The surveillance results in 2007 were analyzed by using Excel and Access. On the spot serological identification and drug resistance test were performed for isolated pathogens. Results From May 1 to October 31 of 2007, a total of 144 098 diarrhea cases were reported in Xinjiang, the accumulative monthly incidence was 716.78/lakh, which was slightly higher than that during the same period in 2006 (682.00/lakh). The cases number increased by 5.10% compared with the same period in 2006, including 10 273 cases of bacillary diarrhea, 591 cases of typhoid and 1 case of cholera. Conclusion Since the incidence of bacterial intestinal infectious diseases in Xinjiang is higher than national average level, surveillance, prevention and control should be further strengthened to control the outbreaks.
