Rabies exposure and performance of rabies clinics in Wenzhou

  • Objective To understand the rabies exposure and evaluate the post exposure prophylaxis service in Wenzhou, and provide evidence for standard dog wound treatment and prevention and control of rabies. Methods The analysis on incidence of human rabies and survey of rabies clinic performance in Wenzhou in 2011 were conducted. Results Five human rabies cases were reported in 2011,all the cases were fatal. Totally 48 268 people were potentially exposed to rabies, in which 39 782 were wounded by dogs, 8486 were wounded by other animals. There were 158 rabies clinics in Wenzhou, in which 89.24% were set in township health centers or community health centers, 50% had compete functional areas, 10 had independent outpatient section, only 17.09% had two-phase hot and cold water supply, 80.38% had wound cleaning facilities and 50 provided round clock service. The clinics doctor number ranged from 1 to 14, most doctors worked in part time. Conclusion Wenzhou is an endemic area of rabies, it is necessary to set standard rabies clinic to reduce the risk of human rabies.
