Current research of passive smoking exposure in Zhejiang

Objective To understand the extent of passive smoking exposure in population and related factors in Zhejiang province, provide evidence for the tobacco control. Methods Multi-stage cluster sampling survey with questionnaire was conducted among the residents aged 15 years in Zhejiang. Totally 2112 questionnaires were completed. Results Among the non-smokers aged 15 years, it was estimated that 56.69%(16.705 million) were exposed to passive smoking,35.37%(10.422 million) exposed to passive smoking daily. The exposure rate was 62.34% for males and 58.38% for females,65.37% for urban population and 53.67% for rural population. Passive smoking exposures mainly occurred in home(60.89%) and in indoor woke sites(65.34%). Age, educational level, resident place and income level were the factors associated with passive smoking exposure. Conclusion The overall passive smoking exposure of people was serious in Zhejiang, it is necessary to take more strict and effective measures to reduce the passive smoking exposure in people besides the health education about the smoking hazards.
