Prevalence of metabolic syndrome among residents in Fangshan district, Beijing

  • Objective To understand the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the residents in Fangshan district, Beijing. Methods Cross-sectional survey was conducted among 4249 local residents aged 20 years, who were selected through stratified random sampling in Fangshan, to analyze the prevalence and distribution of metabolic syndrome among them according to the diagnostic criteria developed by the diabetes branch of Chinese Medical Association in 2004. Results The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 20.38%. With the increase of age, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased significantly(2=252.34, P0.001). The prevalence was highest in age group 60 years. The prevalence rate was 20.44% in males and 20.32% in females, the difference had no statistical significance (2=0.018, P0.05). In age group 40 years, the prevalence rate in males was higher than in females, and in the age group 50 years, the prevalence in females was higher than in males. Conclusion Metabolic syndrome has become a major health problem among the residents in Fangshan. It is very important to carry out community based comprehensive prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.
