Awareness of HIV/AIDS related knowledge and AIDS or syphilis prevalence in male patients at STD clinics in Ningbo

Objective To understand the awareness of HIV/AIDS related knowledge, high risk behaviors and the prevalence of AIDS and syphilis in male patients at STD clinics in Ningbo and explore the related factors. Methods The data were collected through face-to-face interviews and serological tests strictly followed the requirements of national HIV sentinel surveillance protocol. Results A total of 4800 male patients were enrolled during 2010-2015, their mean age was 37.1212.06 years, but majority of them were aged 20-50 years. Seven patients were HIV positive (0.15%) and 492 patients were suffered from syphilis (11.42%). The awareness rate of HIV/AIDS related knowledge was 58.80% with a trend of increase year by year. The awareness rate was significantly associated with age, high-risk behaviors and the acceptance of the interventions. The rate of three high-risk behaviors, i.e. sex with female sex worker (FSW), injection drug use and anal sex with men, declined year by year. Conclusion The HIV/AIDS related knowledge awareness rate was relatively low in male patients at STD clinics in Ningbo. The extramarital sex of the married still needs to be focused in the future interventions. The effective interventions should be conducted to control the high risk behaviors of syphilis patients. Based on the situation of Ningbo, multiple interventions need to be explored to tackle with HIV related issues among STD male patients.
