Risk assessment of global cholera epidemic in 2023

  • Objective The global cholera epidemic in 2023 was characterized by wide spread and high case count. With the steady increase of entry-exit travelers, it is necessary to assess the risk for the importation of cholera into China and the potential of further local transmission.
Methods Based on the global cholera surveillance data, factors affecting the spread of cholera, and incidence data of imported cholera in China, the risk for the importation of cholera into China and the potential of further local transmission were assessed qualitatively.
Results The assessment indicated a moderate risk for the importation of cholera into China and possible local epidemics caused by imported cholera cases.
Conclusion To prevent the importation of cholera, it is necessary for entry ports in China to strengthen disease surveillance and risk assessment, health quarantine for travelers from high-risk countries or regions, emergency preparedness and health supervision, and carry out health education for international travelers.
