Epidemiological characteristics of pertussis, Ji'nan city, Shandong province, 2019−2022

  • Objective  To explore the temporal trends and epidemiological distribution characteristics of the reported cases in Ji'nan city, Shandong province from 2019 to 2022.
    Methods The reported cases of pertussis in Ji'nan from 2019 to 2022 were collected through the Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System, and the temporal, spatial and population distribution characteristics of pertussis in Ji'nan were analyzed by descriptive epidemiological methods.
    Results The average annual incidence of pertussis was 4.57/100 000 in Ji'nan from 2019 to 2022, and the incidence decreased first and then increased. The incidence of pertussis was mainly concentrated in the group of <1 year old and 1–3 years old, with a total of 945 cases, accounting for 57.17% of the total incidence. The majority of occupations were scattered children, children in nursery care and students, accounting for 97.94% of the total incidence. There were cases of pertussis in 13 districts and counties in Ji'nan, with Zhangqiu district being the highest, accounting for 14.82% of the total incidence in Ji'nan. The incidence peak was in August, accounting for 10.22% of the total incidence.
    Conclusion  From 2019 to 2022, the incidence of pertussis in Ji'nan city decreased rapidly and then rebounded, mainly in younger children. It is suggested to strengthen pertussis surveillance, promote the establishment of pertussis disease active surveillance system, and improve the prevention and control strategy of pertussis.
