Response to the first imported Lassa fever case in Beijing, 2025

    Abstract:
Objective To describe the onset and epidemiological characteristics of the first imported case of Lassa fever confirmed in Beijing, introduce the response procedures , and provide references for the prevention and control of imported Lassa fever in China.
Methods Epidemiological investigation and close contact tracing and management were conducted in accordance with the “Lassa Fever Prevention and Control Plan (2024 Edition)”. Real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect Lassa virus nucleic acid in collected human and environmental samples.
Results The case developed symptoms on October 4, 2025 when he worked in Guinea, Africa, and was locally diagnosed with malaria and typhoid fever. After ineffective treatment, the patient returned to China on October 22. The blood and urine samples of the cases were tested positive for Lassa virus, and the case was confirmed as Lassa fever on October 26. Close and general contacts were placed under health monitoring, with no abnormalities reported, and all four rounds of sample testing had negative results.
Conclusion This incident represents the first imported confirmed case of Lassa fever in Beijing, with no subsequent local transmission. As exchanges between China and Africa increase, the risk of Lassa fever importation is in increase. It is necessary to strengthen border quarantine and port surveillance, strengthen early identification and laboratory testing, and improve preparedness for epidemiological investigation and emergency response to prevent the importation and local spread of the disease.
