Abstract:
In December 2025, a total of 70 infectious diseases were reported globally, affecting 236 countries and regions. Except for influenza, the top five infectious diseases affecting greatest number of countries and regions were Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (236), mpox (142), dengue fever (38), cholera (22) and measles (22). The top five infectious diseases with highest case fatality rates were Marburg virus disease (70.6%), yellow fever (41.2%), Middle East respiratory syndrome (36.6%), Lassa fever (18.7%) and West Nile virus infection (8.7%). The top five infectious diseases with greatest number of deaths were COVID-19, cholera, dengue fever, chikungunya virus disease and Lassa fever. The prevalent infectious diseases in Africa were cholera, Marburg virus disease, Lassa fever, poliomyelitis, Rift Valley fever and mpox, the prevalent infectious diseases in Asia were cholera, COVID-19, mpox, dengue fever and Middle East respiratory syndrome, the prevalent infectious diseases in America were yellow fever, COVID-19, mpox, dengue fever and chikungunya virus disease, the prevalent infectious disease in Europe were COVID-19, mpox and measles.
