Outbreak of ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo Virus — Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, May 2026

Abstract: The Bundibugyo virus has caused two outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola virus disease) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. In May 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda experienced another large-scale outbreak of Bundibugyo-type Ebola hemorrhagic fever. As of June 2, 378 confirmed cases and 63 confirmed deaths have been reported. No cases have been reported in the United States. To mitigate the risk of sustained transmission of the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola hemorrhagic fever—including potential spread beyond the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda or introduction into the United States—the continued collaboration between the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and international partners, along with enhanced coordination among U.S. government agencies, is essential.
