The 2026 Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in context: lessons from previous outbreaks

(Democratic Republic of the Congo,DRC)和乌干达(Uganda)引发过两次本迪布焦病毒病疫情。

Abstract: The Bundibugyo ebolavirus previously caused two outbreaks of Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. In May 2026, a large-scale outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease occurred again in both countries. As of September 7, a total of 6 757 confirmed cases and 3 267 confirmed deaths had been reported. This article analyzes the detection and confirmation processes of the three Bundibugyo virus disease outbreaks. Delays in outbreak detection and confirmation, along with differing environmental contexts, were identified as the primary factors contributing to the spread of the current outbreak. To reduce the risk of sustained transmission of Bundibugyo virus disease, global public health partners need to maintain continuous cooperation, strengthen surveillance, and enhance capabilities for early detection, confirmation, and response.
