Abstract
Objective The study was conducted to explore the distributive patterns and the incidence characteristics of injury death among the inhabitants in five counties of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region(XUAR),so as to provide scientific foundations for the prevention of injuries. Methods A retrospective investigation was carried out to classify and analyze the death causes of the inhabitants in five counties of XUAR in 2004-2005 according to ICD-10.Results The mortality rate of the injury during 2004-2005 was 71.33/lakh in five counties of XUAR,accounting for 11.20% of the overall rate. The primary death cause for accidental injuries was the vehicular traffic accident. The mortality rate of inhabitants over 20 years of age was found higher than others, still higher in male than in female.Vehicular traffic accidents had contributed primarily to the potential years of life lost(PYLL) in men, followed by drowning, which contrarily ranked first in the PYLL causes of women, traffic accidents the second. As for the death causes, younger people were more frequently involved in traffic accidents, whereas children under 5 years of age were more likely found drowned, and older people falling. Conclusion Traffic accidents, drowning and other accidents constituted the main death causes of the inhabitants in the five counties of XUAR.Proper countermeasures should be adopted according to the epidemiological characteristics and the age and sex distribution for better prevention of injuries.
