Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda: latest situation

The Bundibugyo virus has caused two viral disease outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. In May 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda once again experienced large-scale outbreaks of the Bundibugyo virus. As of June 22, 1114 confirmed cases and 280 confirmed deaths have been reported. To reduce the risk of continued transmission of the BNDV disease—including potential global spread outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda—global public health partners must maintain sustained collaboration.
