Epidemiology of infectious diarrhea in Quzhou, Zhejiang, 2005-2007

  • ObjectiveTo analyze epidemiologic features of infectious diarrhea in Quzhou and provide evidence to improve the surveillance system.MethodsDescriptive epidemiologic method was used to analyze the data of reported infectious diarrhea cases from routine infectious disease surveillance system during 2005-2007. ResultsA total of 5413 infectious diarrhea cases were reported with annual incidence rate ranged from 55.39/lakh to 95.30/lakh, which showed a increasing trend.The cases in children under 5 years old accounted for 54.78% of the total cases. During August-September, the increase of case was observed which peaked in November in 2005 and 2007 and October in 2006; The cases in scattered children and kindergarten children accounted for 57.09%; followed by the cases in farmers (15.72%).The first 3 county level areas with the incidence rate were Kaihua county(146.28/lakh),Kecheng district (96.51/lakh) and Changshan county (88.22/lakh).Laboratory confirmed cases accounted for 20.97%,among which 60.44% were rotavirus infection. Ten outbreaks of infectious diarrhea were reported during this period, and 1 was caused by Norwalk virus, the pathogens for others were unknown.ConclusionThe infectious diarrhea mainly occurred in children aged 0-5 years, the high incidence was observed in autumn and winter and the incidence in different area varied greatly. Rotavirus infection accounted high proportion of sporadic cases.
