Epidemic analysis of STDS/AIDS in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai, 1999-2008

  • ObjectiveTo determine the prevalence trends and epidemiologic characteristics of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, in Huangnan prefecture, Qinghai province from 1999 to 2008. MethodsThe epidemic data of sexually transmitted diseases in Huangnan from 1999 to 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. ResultsA total of 989 cases, six categories of sexually transmitted diseases, were reported statewide, with the average annual reported incidence rate of 45.79/lakh from 1999 to 2008. The incidence in 2008 increased by 115.15% compared to that in 1999. Most cases were among the 25-year-old age group (accounting for 52.81%). As for occupational distribution, herdsmen accounted for 57.94%, and Tibetan 84.63%. ConclusionSexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, have become a serious social problem in remote pastoral areas of Qinghai. High prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in pastoral areas indicates high risks of rapid spread of AIDS after its introduction, suggesting specific adjustment of control measures and resource allocation.
