A Survey on HIV/AIDS and Syphilis Prevalence among Special Groups of Population in Shaoguan City 2002

Objective To understand the characteristics of HIV/AIDS and Syphilis in Shaoguan and to provide the scientific evidence to government for making corresponding strategies. Methods HIV antibodies were screened using enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), confirmed using western blot (WB) by Guangdong CDC, Syphilis antibodies were screened using ELISA and confirmed by Guangdong CDC. Results Of 356 examinees, 16 samples were confirmed to be infected with HIV, the HIV positive rate was 4 5%, 44 samples were confirmed to be infected with Syphilis,the Syphilis positive rate was 12.4%.Conclusions The rate of HIV and Syphilis infection among drug users in Shaoguan was higher than other citys in Guangdong province and some citys in other province.
