Review of the Strategy for Poliomyelitis Eradication in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

  • Objective This Review was conducted to evaluate the strategy taken in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to eradicate poliomyelitis in order to provide a scientific basis for keeping po- liomyeitis free and controlling and getting rid of other infectious and chronic non-infectious diseases,in-cluding measles. Methods Routine immunization coverage was expanded and, immunity reinforcement and stress immunization were implemented. Surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis(AFP) was strength-ened.Including laboratory monitoring. Investigation of missing cards and capturing-labeling-re-capturing were used for stress immunization and expansion of routine immunization coverage. Results No case of poliomyelitis has been seen in Guang Zhuang Autonomous Region since June 1992,and eradication of poliomyelitis in Guangxi was authenticated in October 2000. Conclusion (1)High routine immuniza-tlon coverage is the basis of eradicating poliomyelitis.Immunization reinforcement and mopping-up im-munization contribute to covering weak and blank regions in immunizations.(2)Investigation of missing cards and capturing-labeling-re-capturing make for perfecting routine and mopping-up immunizations (3)Good laboratory construction and sensitive AFP survey system are prerequisites for timely idemifica-tion and management of the epidemics.
