Monitoring and Analysis on Cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis in Chongqing City of 2003

  • Objective The target of this analysis was to assess the operation of monitoring system of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases in Chongqing City of 2003.Methods Poliomyelitis and non-po- liomyelitis enterovirus were isolated and identified using cell culture from feces specimens of 98 cases of AFP reported in 2003.Results In 2003,there were a total of 98 cases of AFP reported via monitoring system in Chongqing. The sampling rate of qualified feces specimens was 85.39%.Which was sent to poliomyelitis laboratory within 7 days. With a timeliness rate of 94.38%.The samples were finished with isolation and idenfication of virus within 28 days. With a timeliness rate of 100%.5 strains of po-liovirus including 2 strains of type I, 1 of type II and 2 of mixed virus (I+III) and 5 strains of non po-liomyelitis enterovirus (NPEV) were obtained.Ail PVs were identified as vaccine variant strains by Na-tionaI Poliomyelitis Laboratory of Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention under Chinese CDC,Conclusion All indexes of AFP monitoring system have been up to par.In the future, monitoring of AFP cases and management on floating populations should be strengthened continuously until poliomyeli-tis is eliminated arotind the whole world.
