Analysis on Trauma-induced Death among 0-14-year-old Children from 1995 to 2001 in Zhejiang Province

Objective The purpose of this research was to have a better understanding of the epidemi-ologieal characteristics of trauma-induced death among children aged from 0 tO 14 in Zhejiang so as to af- ford implementation of children trauma prevention and control with scientific basis．Methods Death registration data from 1995 tO 2001 in Zhejiang disease monitoring system were utilized，accompanied by classified statistics in terms of death causes using E coding of ICD-9 to calculate trauma-induced death rate，composition of death cause and years of potential life lost (YPLL)．Results Between 1995 and 2001，the trauma-induced mortality rate of 0-14-year-old children was 30.30/lakh．It accounted for 27.25％ of children death cases and was the foremost cause of death among children between 0 and 14 years old．Of which trauma-induced death of babies accounted for 9.11％ which ranked the third among all causes of death for babies．In rural regions，the trauma-induced mortality rate of ehildren(35.40/lakh)was higher than that in cities(7.63/lakh) and among males(36.01/lakh) than females(24.14/lakh)．It demonstrated a decreasing trend along with the rise of children'S age(X2=316.70，P< O．05)，Accidental mechanical asphyxia，accounting for 47.48％ of trauma-induced death，was the paramount reason of baby death，while drowning and motorcar induced accidents were primary causes of death among 1-14-year-old children. Accounting for 59.61％ of children trauma-induced death during the same period of age．The standardized rate of YPLL was 163.72‰．Conclusion Trauma has be-come the 1st cause of death among children aged between 0 and 14 years old in Zhejiang Province，espe-cially drowning and motorcar accidents that have more severe detriments to the life and health of chil-dren，which indicated the urgent need tO carry Out prevention and control work．
