Epidemics of Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever From 1995 Through 2004 in China

  • Objective The present study was to analyze the epidemic features and trend of typhoid and paratyphoid fever so as to provide information for disease control and prevention. Methods Based on the data for the epidemic situation of the typhoid and paratyphoid fever in the recent 10 years all over China and the measurements for disease control and prevention that have been done, the epidemic situation of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in the recent 10 years throughout China was analyzed by SPSS 10.0 software. Results The reported cases, incidence rates and fatalities declined every year. The regional distribution was still shown to be relatively localized, while the incidence season and population structure were not obviously changed.Salmonella paratyphi A had been popular in China and was keeping on spreading, and in some areas it had exceeded the typhoid, yet currently there were some problems concerning the uncertain diagnosis and inaccurate reported cases. Conclusion The epidemic situation of typhoid fever was still severe, while the paratyphoid fever became popular and its incidence was increasing, which needs further investigation. The diagnosis methods for typhoid and paratyphoid need improving, and the incidence structure of typhoid and paratyphoid fever, surveillance for the epidemic development as well as analysis of epidemic factors should be figured out.Meanwhile, combined control measurements should be utilized in the high incidenee area
