Analysis on the Mortality Trend of Malignant Tumors from 1993 to 2004 in Luwan District of Shanghai City

  • Objective The present study was conducted to analyze the change in the mortality trend of malignancies among the inhabitants in Luwan distinct of Shanghai city,in order to provide a scientific basis for the formulation of strategies for the control and prevention of malignant tumors.Methods Statistical analysis was done on the mortality of malignant tumors and the data from population monitoring from 1993 to 2004.The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) was used to code and classify the cause of death over the period from 1993 to 2001 and ICD-10 was used for the classification from 2002 to 2004.The standardized rate was calculated based on the result of nationai census in 2000,and the YPLL (potential years of life lost) and Ypll (standardized potential years of life lost) of various malignant tumors were figured out.Results It was found thart the total mortality of malignant tumors in Luwan distinct took on an increasing trend in the period from 1993 to 2004,and was ranked as the second cause of all deaths.The mortality of malignant tumors was higher in the male than in the female with a ratio of 1.34-1.55.The top six malignant tumors causing death were pulmonary caricmoma, gastric carcinoma.Hepatocacinoma,bowel cancer,esophageal carcinoma,and female breast cancer respectively.The mortality of gastric carcinoma hepatocarcinoma,esophageal carcinoma decreased,but that of leukemia,intestine carcinoma and breast cancer were significantly increased over the 12 years.The findings from YPLL analysis showed that the malignant tumor that was most harmful to the health of the inhabitants in Luwan distinct over the period from 1993 to 1996,1997 to 2000,and 2001 to 2004 was hepatocarcinoma with the standardized YPLL being 2855.77.2701.91and.
