Analysis on epidemiological characteristics and trends of HIV/AIDS in Hefei City from 1997 to 2004

  • ObjeCTIVe The present study was designed to analyze the current status.Features,affecting factors and trends of HIV/AIDS epidemic in Hefei City from 1997 to 2004 and provide information for the formulation of strategies for epidemic prevention and control Methods Analysis was made on the epidemiological data of HIV/AIDS,collected in the city from 1997 to 2004 in unlicensed prostitutes,drug abusers and throtlgh the sentinel surveillance in STD clinics and routine surveillance of medical facilities and voluntary counselling test(VCT),and confirmed by lab studies.Results An accumulative total of 131 HIV antibody positive cases,of whom 69 cases developed AIDS,Were reported from 1997,when the first case of AIDS was found。To the end of 2004 It was found that the main transmission route of HIV/AIDS include infection from blood collection and donation and blood/blond product transfusion with an increasing proportion in heterosexual transmission and appearance of mother-to-baby transmission;Paid blood donors.Blood recipients and spouses of the infected in the northern Anhui are predominantly affected with natives less affected Conclusion HIV/AIDS epidemic in the city of Hefei is in a low prevalence but the epidemic spreadsfaster than ever before An epidemic trend of its spreadingfrom hiph risk population to general population is observed.Epidemic surveillance,heath education development and behavior interferances shonld be reinforced to hold back the trends of AIDS wangmission and AIDS spreading
