The surveillance and analysis of filariasis epidemic situations in Nanhui District of Shanghai after the eradication of the epidemic on the whole

  • Objective this study was designed to see and evaluate the results of surveillance on lymphatic filariasis in Nanhui District of Shanghai since its eradication on the whole in 1981 there, getting the data ready on China'S situations in the eradication of the epidemic for WHO.Method Etiologic、immunologic and mosquito vector methods were used for the surveillance of patients with chronic filiariasis, those with positive microfiliariaemias, floating population, children and lo-cal residents. Results In the period from 1982 to 1996 when filariasis was eradicated on the whole, the positive rate of filariasis was 0.003% based On etiologic tests,0.04%-0.24% On im-munologic tests and 0.90% in children on immunologic tests. With mosquito vector surveillance re-vealing negative results. In the period of post-eradication consolidation after 1997,the positive rate of filariasis was O based on etiologic tests.O.07%-0.46% on immunologic tests and O in children on immunologic tests, with mosquito vector surveillance revealing negative results. Conclusion There has been only 1 positive microfilarial case found since 1981 when it was proclaimed that fi-lariasis had been eradicated in Nanhui District. There has been no positive microfilarial case found in the surveillance of human population and mosquito vectors since 1987,suggesting that the transmission of filariasis has been cut Off with surveillance achievements consolidated.However.Surveillance of the disease remains to be continued.
