An evaluation on the effectiveness of the interventions for the prevention and control of HIV among non-remunerated blood donors in the city of Zaozhuang.

  • Objective This study was conducted tO evaluate the interventions for the prevention and control of AIDS among non-remunerated blood donors,providing data for better prevention of HIV transmission through blood.Methods The non-remunerated blood donors in the Zaozhuang Municipal Central Blood Station were randomized into an intervention group and a control group Health education including propagandizing knowledge of AIDS prevention was the main intervention.The effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated in combination with the baseline data obtalned in the basic investigations before the intervention.Results After the intervention for 6 months,the awareness rate of routes of HIV transmission in the intervention group increased from 62.6%tO 94.2%and the awareness rate of knowledge about the prevention of AIDS from 77.8%to 99.7%,with extramarital sexual contacts decreasing from 4.9%to 0.9%.There was little change in the control group in the indices.Conclusion Good results have been achieved among non-remunerated blood donors through the intervention,reducing the probability of HIV transmission through blood.
