Investigation and analysis of metabolic syndrome among 1835 retired cadres

  • Objective This analysis was made to get all insight into the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among retired cadres to provide a basis for the formulation of reasonable measures for healthcare of retired cadres. Methods Retired cadres over 60 years of age who received health checkup in Gansu Provincial People'S Hospital from Jan.To Oct.Of 2005 were selected as subjects and height, body weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)were used as measurement indices.SPSS statistical software was employed for data analysis. Results The incidence rate of metabolic syndrome among retired cadres was 11.22% (11.70% in male and 9.42% in female) with no statistical significance between male and female(X2=1.66,P>0.05),including different age groups(P>0.05).The incidence of metabolic syndrome was statistically significant in the age groups:60 to 65 years,66 to 70 years,71 to 75 years,76 to 80 years and more than 80 years(X228.29,24.75,13.49,7.56 respectively,PP>O.05).Between from 60 tO 65 years and more than 80 years was the biggest difference.Difference in the rate was most significant in the age groups of 60 to 65 years and over 80 years. Conclusion Metabolic syndrome is relatively prevalent among retired cadres. It seems that the disease occurs more often in male than in female, but no statistical significance is found. It is seen that the syndrome tends to increase with age.Intervention and control of metabolic syndrome should be taken seriously among retired cadres to prevent the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases
