The status quo of knowledge, attitude and practice of avian contact individuals and community population about bird flu

Objective The present investigation was conducted to get an insight into knowledge，attitude and practice of avian contact individuals and community population about bird flu and the influential factors．Methods A total of 324 avian contact individuals and community population were investigated by means of face-to-face interview and self-filled questionnaires for information of knowledge，attitude and practice about bird flu．Results The status quo of awareness and knowledge about avian contact individuals was worrying．With 41.7％ of the residents being afraid of bird flu and 43.3％of them managing their colds on self-purchased drugs or taking no drugs．It was found that cultural level is closely associated with knowledge，attitude and practice of avian contact individuals and community population about bird flu．Conclusion Currently，the top priority of the govemment and the departments concerned in the prevention and control of bird flu is to be placed on improving the awareness and knowledge of avian contact individuals about bird flu and flu vaccination rate as well as rate of disease diagnosis．Appropriate guidance of the direction of public opinion in the media should be taken seriously．
