Analysis on the status of HIV,HCV and Syphilis infection among drug addicts in Beijing City

  • Objective The present study was conducted to investigate the status on the infection of HIV, HCV and Syphilis in a drug rehabilitation center in Beijing and find out the risk factors that the diseases were transmitted by blood route among drug addicts in order to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of AIDS among this population. Methods Antibodies of HIV, HCV and Syphilis were detected in 486 drug addicts of a voluntary drug rehabilitation center in Beijing in 2005 and the results were analyzed. Results The infection rate of HIV was 1.03%(5/486), HCV 34.36% (167/486), and syphilis 10.29%(50/486). HIV and HCV were mainly transmitted by sharing syringes among the intravenous drug users. Conclusion There existed the risk that bloodborne diseases were transmitted and spread among the investigated drug addicts. It is necessary to enhance surveillance, education on the prevention of the diseases and behavioral intervention for drug addicts so as to reduce the transmission and spread of HIV, HCV and syphilis in the population, and control the spread and prevalence of bloodborne infectious diseases such as AIDS.
