  • Objective This study was conducted to get an insight into the epidemiological characters and the trends of sexually transmitted diseases in Fengcheng City of Jiangxi for providing a basis on which to formulate the preventive measures. Methods The methods of descriptive epidemiology was taken to analyze the data on the epidemic situation of sexually transmitted diseases reported by 37 medical institutions from 1997 to 2006. Results A total of 6782 cases of sexually transmitted diseases were reported from 1997 to 2006. Statistical analysis showed that the incidences of most sexually transmitted diseases had declined since 2000 but the reported cases of Condyloma acuminatum(CA), nongonococcal urethritis(NGU), syphilis and AIDS/HIV infections had been in increase. The spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases changed. Nongonococcal urethritis was dominant in 1900s while CA、NGU and GU came to be in a similar prevalence in the 21st century. Reported cases of HIV infection increased quickly in the past years. Conclusion The epidemic situation of sexually transmitted diseases in Fengcheng was kept under relatively good control, but the prevalence of HIV/AIDS accelerated dramatically, there being a trend of the epidemic being spread from high-risk population to general population, with dissemination within families. Measures should be taken to strengthen surveillance, develop health education and adopt behavioral intervention in order to contain dissemination and extension of AIDS.
