Analysis on results of MSM behavioral surveillance on HIV/AIDS

  • Objective This analysis was made to investigate the awareness rate of HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge and the rate of high risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM), so as to provide early warning and make proper interventions to these groups. Methods With questionnaire provided by Chinese CDC, we investigated MSM anonymously, by going to venues like homosexual bars, sauna rooms or parks where they usually aggregate, or through snowball sampling and inviting them to voluntary counseling and testing services by distributing information on the Internet. Results Of all the subjects, 25.55% recognized that they were in the risk of contracting HIV, the difference among different groups had a statistical significance(x2=40.45, 0.0001). The complete correct rate of awareness of HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge was 40.82%, and with different rate among four groups (x2=15.71, =0.0013); 65.75% knew where to test the HIV infection, and the rates of four groups had statistical significance(x2=8.01, =0.0458). 67.40% had male partners in the past half year, with a medium number of 3. Of all those who had male partners, 3.09% admitted to pay for male sex, 1.54% admitted to sell sex to male; 11.51% had female partners in the past half year. 84.89% would like to use condom in order to prevent HIV infection. In the past half year. Those who have never used condom during anal intercourse with male partners accounted for 11.20%, and 45.56% used condom every time. During the latest anal intercourse with male partners, the percentage for using condom was 56.76%, and the percentage for not using condom was 29.34%.Conclusion MSM haven't fully recognized that they are in the risk of contracting HIV, and there are extensive risk behaviors among them. Interventions should be strengthened on the MSM in sauna rooms and parks.
