A survey on AIDS-related knowledge and sexual behaviors among female sex workers in Jingning County of Zhejiang Province

Objective The present study was designed to get an insight into female sex workers' knowledge about STD/AIDS and their high-risk behaviors related to HIV/AIDS in Jingning County for better interventions on their behaviors in communities. Methods FSWs in public entertainment places in Jingning County were surveyed through questionnaires in November, 2005. Results The awareness rates of STD/AIDS and the route of transmission were 59.92% and 64.88%, respectively, among 102 FSWs. Only 43.10% of them used condom consistently in the past three months. Conclusion Given their low awareness rate of AIDS-related knowledge and prevalent high-risk behaviors, it is highly required that the dissemination of AIDS knowledge and behavior interference strengthened to this group while promoting the use of condom in order to control the transmission of HIV from the promiscuous to the general population.
