Analysis of AIDS sentinel surveillance among commercial sex workers in Henan Province

  • Objective This study was designed to find out HIV infection status and behavior characteristics among commercial sex workers(CSWs)in Henan Province. Methods Cross-sectional sentinel surveys were repeatedly conducted for behavioral and serological surveillance of CSWs in parts of Henan Province. Results The positive rate of serum HIV antibody was lower than 1% at each CSWs sentinel site from 2003 to 2006, but the proportion of consistent condom use remained low. Conclusion The HIV infection rate is relatively low among CSWs in Henan Province, but the infection is on the rise. Health education and behavioral interventions should be reinforced among the CSWs in Henan Province.
