Surveillance analysis of acute flaccid paralysis cases in Jinan city,2000-2006

  • Objective This study aimed at improving the sensitivity of the acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance system in order to detect out the cases with imported wild-type viruses, vaccine variants and derivative strains, and maintain the zero incidence of the poliomyelitis disease. Methods According to the stipulation of Poliomyelitis Surveillance Plan of Shandong province, the monitoring of AFP cases was carried out through the Poliomyelitis Reporting System of Jinan city. Results A total of 1762 cases were reported in Jinan city between 2000 and 2006, of which 260 were local cases, 1192 were migrant ones, other 310 were ruled out of AFP at last. The incidence of non-poliomyelitis AFP under the age of 15 was reported to stay between 3.10/lakh-4.57/lakh. June to August were believed to be the peak season while the group between 0~2 years old were the most often to be hit. The history of immunization revealed that the rate of complete whole course was 95.38%. More than 97.90% cases were interviewed within 48 h of the occurrence of disease. The qualified sampling rate of stool was 96.77%, and more than 96.55% was delivered within 7 days. One hundred percent of the follow-up questionnaire was handed in within 75 days. Conclusion All requirements of the polio-free status have been achieved in the surveillance of AFP cases between 2000 and 2006 according to the stipulations of the WHO and the Ministry of Health.
