Abstract
Objective The study was conducted to investigate the trends and epidemiological characteristics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Karamay of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, provide the evidence for the development of corresponding control strategies. Methods The epidemic data of STDs in Karamay from 2000 to 2007 were analyzed. Results The incidences of STDs have increased since 2000 in Karamay, remaining at high level at present. Major STDs included gonorrhea, non gonococcal urethritis (cervicitis), and condyloma acuminata. However, the constituent ratio of gonorrhea in STDs showed a declining trend, whereas that of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and non gonococcal urethral (cervical) infections increased year by year. Conclusion Since the incidence of STDs in Karamay still remained at a high level in recent years with increasing number of HIV infected people every year, great importance should be attached to the prevention and control of STDs.
