Analysis of the serological results for Brucella in Mudanjiang city in 2007

  • Objective The study was conducted to investigate the conditions of serologically confirmed Brucella infections for further control of the brucellosis epidemic. Methods The Rose Bengal plate agglutination test and tube agglutination test was conducted per GB15988-1995Diagnostic Criteria and Treatment Principles for Brucellosis. A positive Brucella serological results would be confirmed by a positive Rose Bengal test result plus 1∶100(++) or above in the SAT test. Results A total of 126 brucellosis patients were detected in the brucellosis clinics of CDC in Mudanjiang city in 2007, the infection rate being 38.89%. Occupational exposure was found to be the leading cause of brucellosis, the related infection rate being 48.83 percent, followed by food-borne infections, the infection rate being 21.43%. Distinguishable differences were found between various infection rates due to different causes of Brucella. (Xsup2/sup= 12.06, P0.01). As for the serological results, the positive rate among 93 tested men was 44.09%; the positive rate of 33 tested women was 24.24%. The positive rates between men and women were statistically different (Xsup2/sup= 32.27, P0.005 ), for the Brucella infection rate of men was higher than that of women. Conclusion The positive rate of Brucella infection was 38.89% based on the serological results from the Brucella clinics in Mudanjiang city in 2007, significantly higher than the results from previous investigations in recent years. The strict system for livestock quarantine should be established in time, and the individual effective protection measurement for contacts of livestock products should be sparkpluged.
