Epidemiological analysis of 1746 cases of injuries caused by dogs

  • Objective The study was conducted to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of dog-caused injuries among the general population. Methods Data of injury cases from the clinic of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control of Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing city, Zhejiang province were collected from July 2006 to June 2007 for statistical analysis. Results A total of 34 species of dogs were found to have caused injuries among people, hybrids being the predominant. Injuries were found more in summer and autumn than winter and spring, men affected more than women, and more injuries of lower extremities than upper ones. Injury cases in non-public places were 2.75 times those in public places. These injuries were attributed to 4 kinds of cause, manifesting 23 different patterns. Conclusion The prevention of dog-caused injuries and the publicity of related control measures should be strengthened for better management of rabies. Peoples avoidance of causal factors will play an effective role in controlling rabies.
