Analysis of HIV/AIDS prevention and control among mobile population in Hezhou, Guangxi

  • Objective The study was conducted to investigate the current situation of HIV/AIDS among mobile population in Hezhou, Guangxi, and to explore the AIDS intervention strategy for mobile population. Methods A quantitative face-to-face questionnaire survey was made to a consecutive sample of migrant workers who had returned to their hometown, the Babu rural area in Hezhou, Guangzhou. Results A total of 647 subjects had responded to the survey, including 387 men (59.8%) and 260 women (40.2%). The average age of them was 29.01(s.d. 9.95). As a result, 95.7% of them had migrated to Guangdong to earn their living as labor workers. They demonstrated high awareness of AIDS transmission routes such as mother-to-infant and blood-to-blood. However, 25.7% of them had unhealthy sexual activities in the past year, and only 5.3% of the subjects had received the voluntary HIV counseling and test. Conclusion Young adults from rural areas have constituted the major part of mobile population. However, due to their relatively lower education levels, they had poor awareness of the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. Additionally, only some of they would correctly use condoms in sexual activities.
