Analysis of the comprehensive AIDS/STD surveillance of STD clinic patients in Xuhui district, Shanghai, 2007

Abstract
Objective The study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and behavior/practice (KABP) related to AIDS/STD in STD clinic patients, provide the evidence for the development of prevention and control strategies. Methods Questionnaire survey was conducted among the clinic patients, and their blood samples were collected for HIV antibody/syphilis serological test. Results A total of 283 clinic patients were surveyed, most of them were married/middle-aged persons. The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 67.5%. 70.3% of the patients did not believe that they would be infected with HIV; 29.3% of them had commercial sexual activity within the past three months, and among these patients, 50.3% had never used condoms; 67.5% did not use condoms in the last commercial sexual activity. Two patients had positive HIV antibody test results, the positive rate was 0.7%. A total of 47 patients had positive result for syphilis in the RPR tests, the positive rate was 17.2%. The first 3 major STDs diagnosed clinically were syphilis, condyloma acuminatum and gonorrhea. Conclusion STD clinic patients were the high risk group of HIV infection. Therefore, standardized diagnosis and management in STD clinic should be strengthened, and the targeted behavioral intervention and long term dynamic surveillance should be conducted.
