Surveillance of HIV/ AIDS and syphilis among incarcerated persons in Dongyang, 2007

ObjectiveTo investigate the current status of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and ITreponema pallidum/I (TP) infection among the incarcerated population in custodial centers in Dongyang. MethodsBlood samples of 3-5 ml were taken from newly incarcerated persons and HIV 1+2 ELISA and TP-ELISA were conducted for preliminary screening. The positive samples were confirmed by Western Bloting (WB) and ITreponema pallidum/I particle assay (TPPA). ResultsAmong 1371 subjects, four cases of HIV infection (0.29%) and 35 syphilis antibody positive cases (2.55%) identified. ConclusionThe positive rate of HIV and TP infection were high among the incarcerated population in Dongyang. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the antibody detection of HIV and syphilis, conduct health education and improve the management among this population so as to prevent and control the transmission of HIV.
