Abstract
ObjectiveTo investigate the current status of AIDS epidemic in Guangxi Autonomous Region, provide accurate information and scientific basis for the development of appropriate prevention and control strategies and interventions. MethodsAccording to the sentinel surveillance scheme of Guangxi, cross-sectional sentinel surveillance was conducted among drug users, female sex workers, outpatients of STDs and pregnant women. ResultsDuring 2002-2007, 1373, 2090, 2451, 4031, 4163 and 4904 drug users were under surveillance and 199, 262, 292, 394, 374 and 429 drug users were detected to be HIV positive respectively with the positive rates of 14.5%, 12.5%, 11.9%, 9.8%, 9% and 8.7%, and 60, 146, 253, 318, 1423 and 1549 female sex workers were under surveillance with the HIV positive rates of 0%, 2.1%, 2.4%, 3.5%, 0.6% and 1.2% respectively. During 2002-2007, 239, 412, 829, 1672, 2790 and 3154 STDs cases were detected by sentinel surveillance, and the HIV positive rates were 0%, 0.2%, 0.1%, 2.3%, 1.3% and 2% respectively. The transmission of HIV had following features: 1) More than 75% of drug users were IDUs, and about 60% of drug users shared syringes. The infection rate of HIV in highly endemic area slowly decreased, while the infection rates in moderate and mild endemic areas remained stable or slowly increased. 2) The proportion of female sex workers who used condoms at each commercial sex increased gradually, and the HIV infection rates among them ranged from 0.6% to 3.5%. 3) The proportion of STDs outpatients who never used condoms decreased gradually, and the HIV infection rates among them ranged from 0.1% to 2.3% which showed an increasing trend. 4) The HIV infection rate of pregnant women ranged from 0.2% to 1.1%. ConclusionThe AIDS epidemic in Guangxi was severe with the transmission not only in high risk population but also in general population. It is necessary to strengthen the effective interventions and expand its coverage to slow down the AIDS epidemic in Gunagxi.
