An analysis on the epidemiological characteristics of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Yunnan province

ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological characteristics of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Yunnan province, provide references for the treatment and prevention of HFRS. MethodsInformation on HFRS epidemics across the province was collected and statistical analysis was carried out.ResultsA total of 771 cases of HFRS were reported in Yunnan province from 1976 to 2007, among which 48 cases died. The annual incidence rate was 0.06/lakh, and the annual mortality rate was 0.0038/lakh, with fatality rate of 6.23%. Two epidemic peaks occurred from 1986 to 1986, and from 2000 to 2004, with remarkable decrease of mortality in recent years. A total of 14 districts and 67 counties were reported to have HFRS cases. The case in Kunming, Honghe, Chuxiong, and Dali city account for 84.21% of total cases in the whole province, and 40.17% cases were reported in Kunming city. HFRS were reported in every season, with spring as an incidence peak. The attacked population were mainly male young peasants. ConclusionHFRS is widely distributed in Yunnan province, which were mainly reported in the middle and west area of Yunnan province. Further surveillance, prevention and treatment of HFRS is needed.
