Birth surveillance in Luwan district, Shanghai, 2005-2007

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the fertility level and trend of the population in Luwan district, and provide scientific evidence for the development of population. MethodsBirth data of infants in Luwan were analyzed statistically by birth surveillance system in the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention of Luwan district. ResultsThe crude birth rate from 2005-2007 ranged from 4/1000 to 5.74/1000, and the male to female ratio ranged from 103.98 to 107.54. Child bearing women aged 25-34 years was the major group to give birth. The birth body weight of infants increased as the weeks of gestation extended. The birth peaks occurred during August-November. The rate of caesarean was high (64.42%-68.69%).ConclusionLuwan district is in a birth peak period, effective behavior intervention should be taken to improve the health of pregnant women and infants. More attention should be paid to the prevalence of caesarean.
